What Causes Us to Forget Things?

If we had a super memory, we definitely wouldn’t have to worry about ‘forgetting’. Because maybe, we all must have experienced a serious situation just because we forgot. What causes us to forget things?

Basically, “forgetting” occurs when we fail to recall the memory that we have previously stored. Really, what is this thing called Memory?

In short, memory is a variety of information that we store in the brain for recall. This information is formed from a collection of sensations that our senses feel every day.

If we consider it memorable, the selected information will be stored by the brain as short-term memory. And short-term memory that continues to be repeated will be upgraded to long-term memory, and we call it again at a later date.

Unfortunately, based on experience, this memory doesn’t always appear when summoned.

Even when we need it the most! But before we get angry with the memory, let’s hear what the researchers have to say. Apparently, psychologically, there are several scientific reasons why we can forget.

First, we can forget because we rarely recall existing memory.

Second, we forget one memory because there is another memory that is more memorable for us.

Third, we forget because we lack clues to call the memory.

Fourth, we forget because a memory is too traumatic for us to remember.

And fifth, we forget as simple as… it’s intentional, so that we lose our memory of him or her.

Another reason why we forget also comes from the medical world. Remember our favorite dramatic scene? Even though it seems lewd, a severe head injury, can indeed make us amnesia.

Because the process of remembering is formed through a network of neurons in our brain. So if there’s something wrong with the brain, it’s not impossible for the memory to follow.

But you don’t have to poke your head in, if you want to paralyze your memory…

On the one hand, forgetting can mess up life. Just imagine how scary it would be if all the meatball bakers suddenly forgot how to make meatballs.

On the other hand… maybe forgetting is the most beautiful gift for humans. Can you imagine if we can’t forget? How depressed would we be if we couldn’t forget those memories when we were betrayed?

So, just keep repeating useful memories, and let our bitter memories disappear in time. And as always, thank you.
