What is The Power Source of A Watch?

Spread the love

Did you want to buy a watch? It is best to first understand what is the power source of a watch for your reference.

We can’t buy time, but we can buy a watch. It’s not connected, but it’s okay ha ha. This article does want to talk about the watch type anyway.

Watches, in addition to being time indicators, are often used as appealing supports. You could even say, your watch describes what you are. No wonder rich people always have watches that have a crazy price.

Watches have different types. Many things distinguish a watch, from its design, size, color, usability and even to the machine, it is used for.

So, what is the power source of a watch? This time I’m just going to discuss the type based on its power source and how it works on our watches.

Least in terms of the many types of watch machines, I will explain some of the machines that are commonly used by some watch companies. Namely, quartz/battery machines, kinetic, solar, and mechanical movement. The type of watch machine can finally be distinguished by its complexity and impact on certain prices.

Quartz/battery

A quartz or battery machine is a type of watch that we can easily find. In addition to its affordability, care and durability are often the reasons people choose this type of watch.

This quartz machine consists of four main components, namely battery, quartz crystal, microchip, and motor. The way it works is the quartz crystal will move if there’s electricity flowing from the battery, and it produces a very precise movement.

Then it is channeled by the microchip and drives the electric motors to produce a stable and precise movement on the watch.

Kinetic

The kinetic machines on the watches do not have a significant difference from the Quartz machines. The characteristics are the second needle that moves with pop and lock movement.

The only difference in technical terms is that the power source comes from the performance of the rotating rotor due to the movement of the hands. The energy generated is stored in the capacitor and passed to the motor gear, which ultimately moves the second needle at a stable and accurate distance.

Diesel fuel

Next up is a watch that uses a solar engine. The mechanism is not much different from quartz and kinetic machines. The difference is that solar engines need light as a power source. The light source comes from the sun, lamps, and others.

The light is absorbed and stored in a rechargeable power cell that produces motoric gear movement so that it can move a stable and accurate second needle on the watch.

Mechanical movement

This mechanical movement machine can be divided into two types of drives, namely automatic movement, and manual winding movement. It is this type of machine that has the highest degree of complexity. Requires many detailed and complicated components. Let me explain a little bit.

The first is automatic movement. The energy yield comes from the sway of the rotors that rotate due to the movement of the hands. But, it is different from kinetic machines in terms of mechanism and results in the movement of the second needle.

The energy generated from the movement of the hands then moves the magic lever and is stored in the spring play. The energy is channeled through the wheel tray and taken over by the escape wheel. The machine is controlled by the balance wheel resulting in a very smooth movement of the second needle.

The second is manual winding movement. It is not much different from an automatic movement machine, it is just that the power source comes from a rotating crown and is not equipped with a rotor.

The power source that rotates the crown until it hardens accumulates in the main spring. When the crown is moved to the initial position, the main spring will deliver power to move the watch mechanism.

This automatic movement and manual winding movement machine have a power reserve feature of an average of 48 hours.

This means that if it is not used for approximately 48 hours, the machine will shut down and start working again when the watch is moved. Meanwhile, the manual winding movement will also die if it does not rotate the crown for approximately 48 hours depending on the respective power reserve feature.

The Conclusion

That’s four types of watches based on their machines and resources. This could be a consideration for those of you who want to buy a watch and don’t know what is the power source of a watch. And of course, this knowledge will not be useful for those of you who are confused about why people buy watches, even though there are watches on the phone.
