Why Do We Work 8 hours a Day?

Spread the love

Every day many of us are required to work at our workplace for approximately 8 hours a day. But, why do we have to work that long? Why do we work 8 hours a day?

If pulled back, in the days of the industrial revolution, many companies wanted an ever-increasing amount of production. This makes the workers in the factory, forced to work for 10 to 16 hours a day. Just imagining it, it’s exhausting.

But then, on May 1, 1886, the labor movement in the United States, protested against such working time. They demand 8 hours of work, 8 hours of rest, and 8 hours of fun in a day. Until then, the date becomes history and is commemorated as World Labor Day every year.

Nonetheless, it was just the Ford car company, which after that used 8 hours of work a day. As a result of the shorter time, Ford car company workers feel more flexible and more productive in their work. As a result, in a few years, the Ford company made a huge profit, so eventually, the 8-hour work time was replicated by many other companies.

However, not all workplaces use eight hours a day. For example, many companies in Japan have a culture of requiring their workers to work more than eight hours a day. As a result, many workers in Japan are stressed, unproductive, and do not have time to have children because they are busy working.

Yes, so after knowing the long history, hopefully, we can make more optimal use of our time.
